Day Fourteen

Jambo!!!

Today was very emotional. We were overwhelmed as we completed the painting at Sagail and it felt great. We painted the walls and the doors and even the teachers at Sagail started to help us paint . Apart from the painting, playing with the children was also fun and we took them out to play some games whilst we finished off the work.

After that we headed to Mtwapa Academy. We had biryiani for lunch which was really nice and then we were treated to a special performance of entertainment which was amazing. Everyone received special gifts from the school and individual students and Moses, we were all overwhelmed by how much they had come to accept us. Some of us shed few a tears, others managed to keep it inside, it was very emotional for everyone involved as this was the end at Mtwapa after 2 spectacular weeks which none of us will ever forget!

It is near the end now , we fly back tomorrow , and are ready to pack tonight, none of us will ever forget this trip , it has been a life changing experience which will live long in our memories!

Day Thirteen

Mrs True got mugged by a baboon!
It stole her biscuits. She cried out. We all laughed. The Baboon ate biscuits.

Today was the last day of the Safari. After a tired start at 5:30 we got going in our vans out to the Taita Hills Game Reserve to see the animals. It started with some Giraffes running, then some Buffalo's at a watering hole. Our drivers then drove us up to Lion Rock, a lion hang out for the kings of the jungle. After an all clear, we hopped out the vans and had a wander around taking photos and singing the 'Lion King' songs. The incredible views were astonishing to see and it touched everybody. We then left and drove around the planes, spotting more amazing animals like Antelopes, Giraffes and Jackels.

Hungry, we went back to the hotel to have breakfast. At the hotel, there is a watering hole, which is constantly surrounded by many different types of animals. This morning, we spotted some zebra's, antelope's elephants and ostriches. Then the funny moment of the day happened (see above). We then left the reserve and headed to the Maasai village, where we were welcomed with some traditional Maasai dancing. We had a tour of the village, and tried a hand at creating some FIRE! Afterwards, we returned to the hotel all tired out, so hung round by the pool for some chillax (sorry Wubba!).

Day Twelve

Hello all.

Today is the second day of safari and yet again it has been awesome. After an early start, we all got going at 7am to go and see the animals. The first spot of the day was a pride of lions who were literally five metre's away, which was absolutely phenomenal! After that spiffing start we were chauffeured around the game reserve to see some exhilarating animals, for example tremendous elephants, elaborate giraffes, jolly buffalo, beautiful impala's and loads of exotic birds.

We then arrived at a local craft shop/cafe for a quick stop; some of us bought gifts for the family whilst some stocked up on snacks and drinks for the next upcoming journey. Next, we arrived at Taita Hills Game Reserve/Hotel and stopped for a slightly extended break of 4 hours. We had lunch and had a chance to relax by or in the pool before setting off for our second safari of the day at 4 o'clock until half six which was fascinating as there were loads of species of animals. Daniel is the best driver out of them all, he is a legend. Its so different to see them in their natural habitat instead of in a cage its fantastic and the views were amazing the vast space of plains and hills. The birds, especially the rollers, were beautiful birds I thought. As we were driving along a Black Mamba snake crossed our path and scuttled into the undergrowth.

P.s Callum says happy birthday dad for yesterday.

Day Eleven

It was amazing, the day started at 5:00am. NOT GOOD. We rushed up to breakfast all willing to be up at that time! LOL jk, everyone was very tired and could hardly eat their food properly. After we had finished we took hired safari mini buses to the safari hotel. We went straight into the animal business and were soon spotting animals! We saw on the way to the hotel elephants, gazelles, antelopes and monkeys. we got to the hotel and had a drink went to the rooms its a really nice, big hotel with very friendly staff. After that we went down to dinner and went straight back into safari. We then saw Elephants, Giraffes, Lions, Baboons, Jackals, Warthogs, Antelopes, Zebras, Gazelles and some pretty coloured birds that we cannot remember the name of. :-)

Near the end of it we saw a herd of elephants of all ages cross the road just in front of us. It was indescribable and unimaginable. We finished the safari at 6:50 but the time we were meant to be finished was 6:00 :O. Thats because we waited for the awesome elephants to cross :D.
BY THE WAY, there was a FROG in the BOG called bogfrog so yeah, k BYE :)!

Day Ten

Hello!!!

We slept in till 8 today and gathered all the suitcases which were donated, and headed to the orphanage. At the New Light Children's Home (orphanage) we had a guided tour by the children and then sat down whilst they entertained us with poems and songs we even entertained them with a few songs we have picked up during our time here. After the children's home Moses took us for a tour round the Mtmondoni village were we visited 20 houses and gave each of them a donated suitcase (containing a mixture of clothes, shoes, teddies, rice, maize, and Mosquito nets). We even watched a traditional wedding ceremony, and dances where Emily S and Jack T joined in. It was GREAT! This was a VERY tiring experience BUT it was enjoyable and well worth it!

After non-stop hard work we took a relaxing trip to the supermarket where we bought some supplies for the following days. Instead of our usual transport we took a taxi back to the hotel. After a great day we are packing for a safari and having to get up at 5 means an early night tonight.

Update

Unfortunately due to a lack of internet access (this is being added from a mobile phone) there will be no blog this evening.

We are also away on the first day of our safari tomorrow and we are unsure of what internet facilities we will have available to us. As such please do not panic if the blog does not get updated for a few days and rest assured we will update it as soon as possible.

Day Nine

Hello!

We had a lie-in until half 8 today which was a nice change considering we had been getting up at 6 for the past 5 days. After having breakfast at 9 , we then started the day with a visit to Bombolulu cultural centre, which we spent a few hours there , and at the end everyone bought presents and souvenirs for family and friends. The visit consisted of touring around the different workshops and gaining an insight into disabled workers and how they are accepted in Kenya. We also got to look varieties of different Kenyan tribal camps.

After leaving there at around 2pm we then came back to the hotel to drop off all the presents and get ready to go to the public beach! After arriving at the beach we then went to the Pirates restaurant on Pirates beach funnily enough! As we sat and ordered the drinks and food, we all discussed how we thought all of our friends - who we invited from Mtwapa Academy - were not going to turn up. Immediately after we had said this, a herd of students hurtled around the corner and greeted us enthusiastically. After finally eating, we rushed off to have fun with the kids on the beach with plenty of sand fights and laughter which got everyone excited! Mr Jones found himself scared again when he let out a loud cry when he found himself confronted by a dead crab much to the laughter of everybody else! After what seemed a very short, and fun filled 3 hours, it was time to say a quick goodbye and go back to the hotel. A really good and enjoyable day overall, one of the best for sure!

Day Eight

Jambo!
Well what a day today has been! in my opinion (laura) the best so far!
This morning we went to the nursery. When we arrived the plasterers were just doing the last touches to the walls and were just starting on the floor. We then spent a couple of hours teaching lessons but because there was such a small space to work in we decided to take all the kids outside for a miniature sports day. Whilst this was going on a woman came in to do peoples henna tattoos. All the girls had them as they were so cheap! I (lauren) have had one going round my wrist, one on my back and one on my knee going down to my toes. Laura had them on her wrist, on her arm, hands and legs, they look amazing!

We then walked up to Mtwapa for lunch which was cooked by Amina, we couldn't wait for lunch as Amina is extremely good at cooking! After lunch we spent some time with our close friends and then we walked up to the field pitch for football. I (Laura) was in team A and Lauren was in team B, obviously my team won as i was in it, but i was very impressed with Lauren's skills. After the girls match it was the boys turn. i think team A might of won but i'm not certain (although Callum did score a goal and started a pitch invasion!). whilst the boys match was happening the Mtwapa girls offered to braid our hair, it looks rather sweet although it looks much better on them than us. We also caught lots of grasshoppers as there was a corn field next door. Jake went and got a tiny grasshopper and held it to Mr.Jones's face, he screamed like a hormonal girl! it was hilarious! everyone was laughing and pointing at him. Tomorrow we are going to Pirates Beach and so we all asked our close friends to come and join us there.

Laura & Lauren

Day Seven

Hey hey hey!

What a great start to the day! an whole hour extra lie in bed! This meant that breakfast was at 7:30, and we left at 8. We headed straight to the nursery, and got stuck in with playing and teaching (Mr Jones was learning!) with the children. The builders were there, and continuing plastering the corridors and classrooms. Emilie and Me (Ellie) repainted the sign outside whilst the rest of us were either shopping (buying rice and maize for local families) or having fun with the little ones.

Before we knew it, it was lunchtime, so we headed back to the Academy where another delicious meal was waiting for us. We played with the children from the school, and continued building our friendships. After lunch, we didn't head back to the nursery, as we would get in the builders way, so we went to the Moorings floating restaurant on the river. The weather was beautiful, so some of us sunbathed whilst we sat outside enjoying the view. Afterwards, we headed back to the hotel, for some well earned chillax!

Ellie King and Jack Hall!

P.S Ellie and Rahi took the photos today, that is why they are so much better than usual (stink on Mr Jones!)

Jack Hall: Hi everyone, i cant get an expensive, enormous, shiny, new, fandabulous present, so i got her a monkey. I am missing you all and i hope that the dog hasn't made a mess in my bed. Im having a great time and i think u are all enjoying the two weeks of peace at home:). BYE!
Ellie: Hi everyone who cares to read this! Having a fabulous time, and REALLY missing you all! Well done Katie in the worlds, and i hope you went in all the races this time! lol. Love you allllllll LOTs, ellie xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Day Six

We woke up early for the last time this week (6am) so the other two groups could go to Amina's house to cook. We arrived at Mtwapa Academy at 7:30am (ish) for the morning assembly. Then Wubba Jake, Laura and Jack.T went to Amina's house to make our lunch (Biryani).

While at Sagail Nursery/ Primary school the builders started to plaster the walls with the help of the boys and Ellie, ready for us to paint the walls. The walls began to take shape and form a smooth surface. It was good to see the improvements in front of our eyes. While the girls and Rahi took over the lessons. Emily S, Lauren and Emilie taught English, RE, maths and more English. Emily S, Emilie, Ellie and Shannon painted the sign yet again, ready to write the school's name, proudly, on there tomorrow.

At lunch we ate the two groups meal which was Biryani and Mtwapa potatoes. Then in the afternoon we stayed at Mtwapa Academy and supervised the classes that were doing their end of year tests, while some looked after the kindergarten groups. Emilie had to take the same test as standard 6. The little ones were really hyper and kept on harassing us, especially Jack,H in which they stretched his top that now looks like a dress. In between the tests the pupils played a game of football where numerous people got trampled on.

Emilie, Emily S and Jake x

Jake: Hey everyone at home, especially mummy :) miss you so much. Can't believe you missed waving me off. Love Emilie (P,S in the word of Laura 'I swear down if you do not comment inhere soon i'll do something drastic, like not eat my pudding!) xxx

Day Five

This morning we were all tired apart from Ellie (obviously a morning person unlike the rest of us) the time we woke up was 6. We went to the Mtwapa Academy school. My group (Jamie's) and Drew's went to a parent called Amina's house to help prepare lunch for the Kenya team. By our standards it was quite basic it had four rooms living room, kitchen, bathroom and one bedroom. We had to clean the rice, peel and grate the carrots and peel the potatoes.

The journey to Amina's was moving. The houses were made from wooden frames coated in mud, some were concrete. We had to carry the food back but usually Amina has to carry two or three bags back herself!

When we got back to the academy we had lunch said our goodbyes to Amina and walked to the Sagail nursery. At the school we painted one of the classrooms and took lessons, which was surprisingly difficult. Jamie's group had to do the second layer of paint which i got covered in. We spent some time with the children there. Laura and Callum are great with kids.
